Recycling and Household Waste

Recycle

Bedford, Cople and other surrounding villages are fortunate to have a reliable weekly household rubbish and recycling collection plus nearby waste sites (Tidy Tips) which are clean, easy to use and at no additional cost. These sites allow you to deposit your waste items according to type, eg paper, metal, wood, electrical etc which permits efficient handling and recycling. Please use them.

Recycling News for Cople residents

Bedford Borough council provides a glass recycling bin at the rear of the car park at The Five Bells public house. Residents can recycle green, brown and clear glass. Only these items can be placed in the recycling bin, if the bin is full, do not leave your recycling in bags or boxes on the floor, residents can contact the Council's helpdesk on 0800 121 8888, and arrangements will be made for the bin to be emptied.

If full, the nearest glass recycling site to Cople village is The Crown Public House, Station Road Willington or Tesco, Cardington Road Bedford. When using the site, please take any litter home with you and please consider local residents nearby and avoid using the site in unsociable hours. Please remember you can place paper and magazines in your orange bin or bags.

The good news is Bedford Borough is recycling 35%. If you would like a recycling bin/bags or a garden bin, or more information regarding waste and recycling, please ring the helpdesk on 0800 121 8888 to place your request or visit www.bedford.gov.uk and follow the link at the top that reads Environment and Planning, then chose the Waste, Refuse and Recycling link on the left hand side.

A large, modern, clean, eay-to-use recycling and waste site is in Barkers Lane, Bedford. Another one can be found just past Sainsburys in Biggleswade.

Charity

Bedford has several charity shops that are pleased to accept donations of books, clothes in good condition and other household items. Using the local telephone Yellow pages locate those you wish to support to find out what, when and where to deliver it.

Also keep a watch for local fetes who often appreciate donations for their stalls and raffles.

Old toners and mobile phones

Cople Lower School is collecting empty laser printer/photocopier toner cartridges, ink jet cartridges and unwanted mobile phones.

Often these items should not be thrown away with normal household rubbish as they can pollute the environment. But they can be recycled. Not only is this environmentally friendly but with sufficient quantities can raise money for new school equipment.

Cople Lower School is collecting these items on an experimental basis. Please do bring your unwanted cartridges and phones to the school.

If you wish to check first that the school is still running this scheme please phone the school on 01234 838827

Collections

Weekly household rubbish collections are made each Tuesday. Alternate weeks allows for collection of garden waste and paper for recycling. During some winter months the garden waste collection may be suspended.

The council will make special collections on request. There is a charge for this service

Furniture

Some charities will collect useful, unwanted furniture that can be re-used or sold for their charity. You will need to contact them to find out if they currently need the type of item you wish to donate.

Skips

Twice a year the council "bin men" visit the village and wait for residents to bring their waste to the skip lorries. This is usually in spring and autumn. Once announced the date and times are advertised around the village, in the Parish Magazine and in this web site.

Carers Support Service in Bedfordshire

If you or someone you know provides unpaid support (not including benefits) to someone who is ill, frail, disabled or who has a mental health or substance misuse problem - that makes you a carer. Many carers do not see themselves as carers; they say they are just someone's husband, wife, relative, friend or neighbour. However, if you carry out caring responsibilities for someone who could not manage without your help then that means you are a carer and are entitled to information and support.

For information, advice and support around your caring role contact Carers in Bedfordshire on 0300 111 1919, email contact@carersinbeds.org.uk or visit www.carersinbeds.co.uk
