Roots

Jo Spencer, an aspiring American screen writer from Kentucky is developing a film script based upon her family history. She has been researching the many roots of her family tree one of which may have lead her back to a Nicholas Spencer of Cople in the seventeenth century.

If you have any information regarding Nicholas Spencer I am sure she would be interested to hear from you. Read more of Jo's family history research and her search for her film finance from these web sites Jo Spencer and Finance request

Summary of Speed Device

Cople Parish Council has for the second time this year had the use of the Police Speed Activated Device (SID) to record and monitor vehicle speeds in our village. The machine is self calibrating and displays the speed of an oncoming vehicle accompanied with either a smiley face if travelling at a legal speed or a sad face if the legal speed limit is being exceeded.

The SID machine was positioned in areas of the village where children are known to walk to and from school. On average, 50% of vehicles were travelling in excess of 35 miles per hour, the fastest recorded being 50 MPH. During a two hour session at lunchtime, 68 vehicles left the village in the direction of Northill, 34 of which were exceeding the speed limit. The vehicles recorded covered the full spectrum of traffic we see in our village and included buses, commercial vehicles as well as private vehicles. Details of recorded offenders are passed to Bedfordshire Police.

Deep Water (updated 16/03/09)

I have received this email 04/03/09 from Cople resident, Mic Martin. His dramatic rescue and recommendations are worth heeding

I would like to tell you about an incident last week at the back of my house in Northill Road. Our garden backs onto the farmer’s fields and faces towards the hangers. There is a small pond in the field to the left of my house.

Last week I was in the garden when I heard shouting. This was obviously a dog owner trying to recall the dog. The shouts became more frantic. I ran out to see a dog in the pond and its handler, an elderly lady, almost up to her shoulders in the water trying to get to the dog.

I slid down the bank pulled the dog out and then the lady, she was soaked. This story could have ended up so differently had I not been there. I must admit even I didn’t think it was that deep.

I request all dog walkers consider putting their dogs on the lead when walking past the pond if the dog's recall isn’t 100%. Secondly anyone who may dump garden waste, soil or even grass cuttings into the pond to stop immediately as it's making the bank almost impossible to climb up, even I found it hard slipping back down twice.

Most importantly I think we need a sign. I shall get some rope when I get back and leave it attached to the side of my fence just in case. In my experience, as a dog trainer and Police Officer, the dog would have probably got out as most do and having seen a person drown trying a similar rescue please don’t go into the water.

Finally thanks to the lady's daughter who brought round a bottle of wine.

The Parish Council has been made aware of this incident and has responded. They are grateful to Mr Martin for raising this concern. The pond is part of privately owned land. The council will communicate with the land owner and, in the first instance, take up the matter of safety.

So far as the prospect of the pond being an amenity is concerned it is unlikely the Parish Council will take on the care and maintenance of land that is privately owned. Any other arrangement would be between the land owner and third party.

Mr Sinfield's 1935 Austin Seven Ruby

I received this email, can anyone shed any light on this car or Mr Sinfield?

Austin Seven Ruby
Sinead's Austin Seven

I'm writing with a query. I have recently purchased a vintage car which started its life in your village. I have been looking through the registration book and I would love to know how my little car started out.

I'll give you some details. My car is a 1935 Austin Seven Ruby; colour : Dove Grey. It was first registered in 1948 by John Sinfield with an address of 46 Cople. Then in 1952 it was registered by an Albert Ernest Sinfield address: East View, Willington Rd, Cople.

If you could help I would love to know a little about these people, their trade, status.. anything really.

The car is now in a small village in the west of Ireland...and it's still going great. Thanks in advance, Sinead Waters

Update: 26/01/09: We were out in it today for the first time

If you can help Sinead please email me and I will forward it on to Sinead, thanks, Ian.
