Join us and discover the hidden secrets of the medieval vineyard and abbey, why and how the monks made wine, the re-planting of the modern vineyard, and how we care for the vines all year round. Follow our free self-guided tour around the vineyard and browse the growing number of local food and craft stalls, maybe with a glass of one of our chilled wines in hand!
There will also be guided vineyard tours*, and you can learn about wine with an expert at our “pop up” wine school*. History enthusiasts can visit the Old Warden History and Heritage Society stand to find out how Warden Abbey, which dominated the local landscape, might have looked around 650 years ago. There’s also Animal Edge petting zoo (included in entry price), face-painting, plant and vine sales, our popular herb activities for children, Morris Dancing, award-winning BBQ and other refreshments.
Enjoy free tasters of the wine and our fizz – try before you buy!
BBQ lovers are in for a treat. World Food Championship winners ‘The Wonky Donkeys’ will be heading up the BBQ again. They’re quite simply the best, having racked up many international and national medals.
The vineyard, near Old Warden, is now run as a community and education project by Bedfordshire Rural Communities Charity and cared for year round by volunteers. The Open Day is organised by the Friends of Warden Abbey Vineyard. For more information and directions see www.wardenvineyard.org.uk
The full programme of tours, talks and tastings will be available later in the month on our website so you can plan your visit – tickets for these available at the Information Stand on the day.
The vineyard is grassed, on a gentle slope. Wheelchair access to some areas may be limited but most stalls are accessible for motorised chairs and scooters. Disabled parking area close to entrance. Disabled toilet.
Dogs welcome but must be kept on leads at all times please.
